Is slavery wrong?
Introduction. Our modern society views slavery as something inherently evil. We almost self-destructed as a country over the issue (i.e., the Civil War). There have been many discussions and debates regarding the Bible and slavery. From scriptures that discuss slavery under both the Law of Moses and the Law of Christ, we learn that the Bible neither explicitly prohibits nor encourages slavery. It did not originate the practice, but sought to regulate the existing custom of slavery and required certain conduct from each party. See Leviticus 25, Exodus 21 & 22, Ephesians 6:5-9, and Colossians 3:22-4:2. Also consider the book of Philemon. It is written by the Apostle Paul to a Christian named Philemon concerning a runaway slave named Onesimus. In the context, part of Paul's dissertation is regulating that relationship.
The Golden Rule. The teaching in passages such as what we call the "Golden Rule" should cause the Christian not to harm or want to have dominion over another man. As Matt. 7:12 says, "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets."
