What are some obligations to truth?

Introduction. In an age when many efforts seem to be directed toward de-emphasizing the truth and obligations in general, it is refreshing to address a question pertaining to the truth.

Truth and the Godhead. Man can learn there is a Creator by observing creation (Ps. 19: 1). However, to learn the mind, nature, and will of God man must look to God's word, the Bible (Acts 17: 22-31). As you carefully study deity, you find that truth is an essential part and trait of God. God, for instance, is said to be a "God of truth," Jesus is truth, and the Holy Spirit delivered the truth through the apostles (Deut. 32: 4; John 1: 14; 15: 26, 16: 13).

Some obligations to the truth. The scriptures are replete with teaching regarding man's duties to the truth of God's word. First of all, let it be known that the truth can be understood and understood alike (Eph. 3: 3, 4, 1 Cor. 1: 10). Also, the truth is presented in God's word (Heb. 1: 1, 2, John 17: 17, Col. 1: 5, 23). Man is to know, believe, and seek the truth (John 8: 32; 1 Tim. 4: 3; Jere. 5: 1). Man is to worship in truth, walk in truth, and love the truth (John 4: 24; 2 John 4; 2 Thes. 2: 10-12). Moreover, we are under obligation to speak and rightly divide or handle aright the truth (Eph. 4: 15, 25; 2 Tim. 2: 15).

Truth is important. The truth is important because it sets free, purifies the soul, and stabilizes (John 8: 32; 1 Pet. 1: 22; 2 Pet. 3: 17, 18). When we realize the importance of the truth, we understand John's joy that certain ones walked in the truth (2 John 1-6). It is tragic and sad that we basically live in an age when there is little appreciation for the truth. The scriptures teach, "Buy the truth, and sell it not..." (Prov. 23: 23). We must sacrifice to obtain the truth and then hold on to it regardless of the sacrifice or cost!
