Must elected officials have good morals?
Introduction. One of the more recent situations which may have occasioned the forgoing question is the controversy concerning president Bill Clinton. All are aware how Mr. Clinton has been accused of adultery. Some have defended Clinton by saying, "a man's private life had nothing to do with his ability to politically serve his country!" is this argument valid?
Leaders have tremendous responsibility. If their life is not what it should be, there are enormous consequences, King Nadab's immorality caused moral decay in Israel (1 Kings. 15:25,25). God's spiritual leaders must meet strict requirements (1 Tim. 3:1-7). Preachers are to be examples to others (1 Tim. 4:12). But what does a politician's moral life have to do with his ability to politically serve?
Faithfulness. Concerned reader, if a man has been continually unfaithful to his marriage vows (I Don not know anything about Mr. Clinton's marital faithfulness or unfaithfulness), why should we think he should be faithful to his political vows? In other words, if a man lies in one area, why should we expect him to be truthful in another area? The advocates of the new morality (which is immortality) are, in effect, destroying any and all true quality of life for Americans. We pay a great price when we seek to do away with morality. Corresponding to the current political corruption, is a decline in morals in general. I believe the Bible teaches that elected officials (and all men) must have good morals! (Prov. 31:1-9).
