How about men wearing long hair?
Introduction. Our question poses a difficulty in that "long" is a relative term. Many young men had hair lengths which were considered long for the 50's, but would be viewed as clean cut by the standards of the 90's.
What the Bible says about long hair on a male. Paul taught the Corinthians about headship (I Cor. 11: 3, 4). Some were ignoring headship, especially in the exercise of spiritual gifts (vss. 3-16). Paul explained that there are certain signs of masculinity and femininity. He stated, "...if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her..." (1 Cor. 11: 15). Paul said the opposite was true of man, "Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?" (vs. 14). You will observe "long hair" is befitting the woman, while "long hair" is a shame to man (Paul agrees with the teaching of nature).
Long hair on males in our society. Most people realize that styles, mannerisms, and appearances in general have an attached statement. For example, there is "the attire of an harlot" (Prov. 7: 10). The earring on the male advocates a certain life style. The location of the earring also has meaning. The hair, earring, clothes, and mannerisms make a loud announcement to others. One can easily study the drug culture, free sex, and various movements of rebellion and determine associated meaning and symbolism.
We have granted the relativity argument. Also, what is true of the male is true of the female (the opposite). However, there are certain norms. Whenever one has difficulty determining the gender, changes need to be made. The bottom line is, men should appear as men and women should appear as women. Not only is this true regarding physical appearance as such, but the same is true concerning conduct and actions in general (1 Cor. 11: 3-16; Eph. 5: 22-6: 4).
