How about the unscripturally married?
Introduction. I recently watched a religious call-in question program during which the preacher told of his life. He had been previously married to a woman whom he abused. He had committed adultery with prostitutes, he explained. As a result, his wife divorced him. He remarried and presently has a child. A caller immediately asked him in essence, "Does not the Bible teach that your present marriage is wrong?" According to the preacher, his present marriage is allowed by God.
Marriage is for life. God originally instituted marriage between one man and one woman for life (Gen. 2:21-24; Matt. 19: 4-6). Paul later wrote "...for the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth..." (Rom. 7: 2). Death, then, frees the living mate. Jesus taught, "...what therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder" (Matt. 19: 6).
Other than death, fornication is the only acceptable reason for remarriage. Jesus explained that if one puts away one's wife for any cause other than fornication, he "causes her to commit adultery" (Matt. 5: 32). Therefore, for a divorce to be scripturally right, it must be performed by the innocent party against the adulterer (Matt. 5: 32; 19: 9). Since the "innocent party" is allowed to divorce and remarry in the foregoing circumstances, it is obvious that the "guilty party" is forbidden remarriage. The one who "marries her which is put away doth commit adultery," Jesus explained.
Our society is plagued with divorce and remarriage. Churches are filling up with divorced and remarried people, many of whom are in direct opposition with the scriptures. More preachers themselves are in unscriptural marriages. Such marriages are adulterous (unauthorized). We must cease this insanity and return to the Bible and life-long commitments.
