How can tragedies such as Columbine be avoided?
NOTE: This article was originally written not long after the Columbine shooting in 1999. But the similar events in subsequent decades at other schools highlights the continuing relevance of the points made below.
Introduction. The carnage which took place at Columbine High School here in Denver is very regrettable. Our sympathies are extended to all who are directly or indirectly affected.
Listen to the message. Concerned reader, the Columbine incident is making a statement. The message is: Our society has serious problems which must be immediately addressed! The Columbine blood bath and the eight preceding school shooting across the country are not the norm. What is the message?
There must be improvement in the education our children are receiving – both at school and at home. Organic evolution being taught as scientific fact has become a given in many public schools. Darwinian evolution reduces man who was created in the image of God to a mere evolved animal (Gen. 1 and 2). Parents must return to parenting and resume teaching their children about God, values, and morals - the foundation all need (Eph. 6:4).
The American family must be restored. Families are falling apart. Divorce and shacking up are rampant. Families still physically together seldom see each other (both parents working and children on their own). Young people have to have attention, structure, and discipline. Materialism is about the only thing many children are now learning from their parent's examples (Heb. 13:4-5).
Conclusion. There will always be challenges as children approach adulthood. However, if Americans do not change their focus and look to God, we have only begun to see the carnage, I am afraid. The Columbine event was indeed regrettable, but it will not be a total waste if we can learn lessons from it.
