Can you explain headship?

Introduction. Headship is definitely taught in the scriptures (Eph. 1: 22, 1 Cor. 11:3). Headship pertains to authority and rule (W.E. Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, pg. 202).

Christ is the head of his church. "And hath put all things under his feet," Paul wrote, " and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all" (Eph. 1: 22,23). As the head of the church, Jesus has the right and authority to direct and command the church, just as the physical head controls the body. Jesus has given us the scriptures to serve as the creed for his church (1 Tim. 3: 15, 2 John 9-11, John 12: 48). The scriptures are also Jesus' means of expressing his authority and control (John 12: 48). Moreover, Jesus is the only head of his church - in heaven and on earth (Matt. 28: 18).

Christ is the head of every man. Every man has a Lord or ruler to whom they must acquiesce, Jesus (1 Cor. 11: 3). Doing what Jesus says do is submitting to his headship (Luke 6: 46) as well as acknowledging him as Lord (Luke 6:46). All will stand before Christ in the judgment and answer to him (2 Cor. 5: 10). Every man will acknowledge Jesus' headship sooner or later (Phili. 2:10,11).

Man is the head of the woman. Notwithstanding popular opinion, the scriptures teach man is the head of the women (1 Cor. 11: 3). In the case of wives, the wife is to obey her husband (Tit. 2: 5). However, the wife is not to obey in cases of the direct conflict between her husbands and Christ's will (Col. 3: 18).

We all have someone to whom we must answer. In the case of Christ, he is just and righteous (2 Tim. 4: 8). His laws and commandments are good for us and are not harsh (1 John 5: 3). Jesus loves us and wants what is best for us in this world and in the world to come.
