What is the New Age Movement?
Introduction. The New Age Movement is now a significant movement. In some libraries you will now find a section on "New Age Books." Such books are often on subjects such as "The Value of Crystals," "Channeling," etc. Popular personalities such as Shirley Maclaine, Peter Sellers, Glenn Ford and Sylvester Stallone have reportedly embraced the New Age Movement to varying degrees.
"We are all divine beings," according to New Agers. Shirley Maclaine has made numerous public statements regarding her belief that she is god. "Purpose: We are as god and might was well get good at it" (The Whole Earth Catalog, 1983, pg. 82). New Agers quote Psalms 46:10 as saying, "Be still and know that you are god." Some contend that Christ was a man who realized his divine potential which all possess. John Denver said, "One of these days I'll be so complete I won't be human. I'll be a god" (The Wiz of Show Biz, Newsweek, Dec.20, '76). Notwithstanding, the Bible clearly separates deity and humanity (Eccl. 5:2; Rom. 1:25,26; Ezek. 28:1,2).
The New Age movement promotes reincarnation. It is estimated that one-third of Americans believe in reincarnation. Reincarnation has become associated as a common tenet of New Agers' beliefs. One famous actor who has become a part of the New Age Movement is quoted as saying, "In one of my previous lives, I was a monkey." However, the scriptures teach, "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment" (Heb.9: 27).
There are many other beliefs which are usually accepted by New Agers. Beliefs such as "No Absolutes," "Divine Power," and "Channeling," (communication with the dead). Some of their interest in the earth is produced by their espousing Pantheism. "Everything is God." The New Age Movement is yet fluid in its beliefs, but one thing is for sure – It is not new and it is diametrically opposed to the Bible!
